PLEASE READ IF YOU ARE ASKING FOR UK BREEDERS TO EXPORT EGGS OR BIRDS OR BEING ASKED TO, AND YOU WILL SEE WHY WE CAN'T VIABLY DO THIS LEGALLY
Like a lot of you we are constantl
y asked to supply eggs or live birds for export to EU countries and further afield, we have had 7 enquiries in January alone.
To do this legally requires a lot of expense, the license you get is only valid for 2 weeks and needs to be reapplied for if you wish to do it again. Since 2007 all birds and eggs destined for norway and sweeden needed salmonell
a testing, in 2009 it extended to all EU countries
Here is a breakdown of the costs.
Birds and eggs can only be exported from members of the poultry health scheme annual cost Just over £300, the flock needs to be salmonell
a tested thats 2 vet visits, 55 faeces samples tested in a labratory at £275 each time, birds for export again need to be isolated for 14 days prior to shipping and vet checked twice at £120 each visit. (total cost £1090). For eggs in addition to the above the whole flock has to be isolated for 24 days no eggs or birds in or out during that time. Finally birds to be sure of a clear pass through customs need to be vaccinate
d against newcastle disease and avian influenza, not something hobby breeders in the Uk do (annual cost of vaccinati
ng for those here would be in the region of £5000).
Now obviously the cost will vary depending on how many birds you have, if you have 20 birds then 20 faeces samples will be tested for salmonell
a reducing the cost. etc Also if you dont hatch as many as we do the vaccinati
on cost would be reduced.
Exactly the same rules apply for transport of birds between all EU countries but as there are no border controls on mainland Europe they get away with it. Again the EU has made Britain a second class member of the Union.
FINAL NOTE .... DON'T DO IT ILLEGALLY ... I'M SURE IF YOU WERE RESPONSIB
LE FOR DISEASE SPREAD THEN A CUSTODIAL SENTENCE WOULD PROBABLY BE THE ORDER OF THE DAY.
